I think all of us are drawn to strangers to some extent. We all find fascination in the unknown.
I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite past times is people watching. I don’t know what it is, but I can spend hours in a mall or downtown just watching people stroll by. I wonder about their lives, their story. I wonder why they picked the clothes they wore that day.
I have been attracted to street photography for a long time. I love seeing images of people in their everyday life, going about their day with no idea the would be the subject of someones photograph. I admire the photographers that are able to capture these people and give us a small glimpse into their world.
Something I’ve struggled with though, is actually approaching someone, a random person and asking to take their photograph. I don’t know why, whats the worst they could say? Recently, I got to spend an afternoon with Marcelo Yáñez on the streets of Charlotte. Seeing him easily approach people and ask for a portrait was great. It showed me that we are all just people and for the most part we are all pleasant.
I hope to build up the confidence to do this type of photography more. I think that it may even be easier with instant film, seeing as most of our cameras are great conversion starters anyway.
